If the insured pet is a dog or cat with a microchip, the policyholder must provide the following pet information at the time of insurance application:

  • Whether neutered
  • Microchip number

If the insured pet is a cat without a microchip, the policyholder must provide the following pet information at the time of insurance application to expedite the underwriting process:

  • Name
  • Breed

  • Supporting documents - Vaccination records/medical records (including the pet's name, breed, gender, age/date of birth, and the owner's full name, which must match the policyholder's full name)

This plan accepts kitties without microchip^.

^If the insured cat is without microchip, the cat must be clearly identified with satisfactory documentary proof as required by us from time to time (including but not limited to application and claim submissions) that it is the same cat insured under the Policy throughout the entire period of insurance. Such satisfactory documentary proof includes but not limited to vaccination documents, medical records and receipts issued by a licensed vet stating all the necessary identification information of the cat such as its name, breed, sex, age/date of birth and owner’s full name (which must be the same as policyholder’s full name).

Some pet insurance policies in the market promise lifetime renewal. However, "lifetime renewal" only means insurance company do not have a preset maximum renewal age, it does not equal to guaranteed to cover for life. Customers need to pay attention to the policy terms that may specifies the insurance company reserve the right to not renew or terminate the policy. Additionally, there may be clauses for chronic diseases, where after policy renew, the chronic disease may no longer be covered, causing pet owners to face unexpected expenses.

As an individual customer, you can submit a claim application easily via eClaim. Simply register and log in to myPrudential on your mobile phone or computer and upload your claim forms and the relevant documents within 31 days after the incident. What's more, you can also check claim status, and access your policy details anytime, anywhere.

You can insure your pets as young as 13 weeks to 8 years old under this plan. Some pet insurance policies in the market have an entry threshold of 6 months (24 weeks), so this plan provides coverage for younger pets. Even if the pet reaches 8 years old, the policy can still be renewed annually, but it will be subject to underwriting terms and conditions.

Section 1 - "PAWcare" Medical Expenses coverage has a waiting period. For claims due to illnesses (excluding cancer), the illness must first occur after the 30-day waiting period from the policy effective date. For claims due to cancer, the cancer must first occur after the 180-day waiting period from the policy effective date. For claims due to bodily injury, the injury must first occur after the 7-day waiting period from the policy effective date.

If the insured pet has been continuously covered by a similar medical insurance policy from another insurance company in Hong Kong for at least one year immediately before the effective date of this policy, the waiting period for the policy can be waived.

Any illness, injury or physical condition which has existed before policy effective date in respect of the insured furry kid, which presented signs or symptoms of which you have been aware or should have reasonably been aware are not covered.

According to the results of the "Hong Kong Furkid Protection Survey" released by Prudential in April 2024, as many as 86.5% of furry kid owners have not purchased insurance for their pets. Among them, over 40% of furry kid owners rely on savings to cover pet-related expenses, while more than 30% of furry kid owners have not purchased insurance due to the complicated claims process. In fact, many furry kid owners underestimate the cost of pet treatment. Here are two pet cases listed for reference:

Pet insurance case study

Case 1: Cancer Treatment - Breast Cancer

An 8-year-old dog was diagnosed with breast cancer, with total medical expenses amounting to HK$95,527. This includes outpatient and surgical costs of HK$88,207 (assuming one surgery, X-ray examination, ultrasound examination, and laboratory tests), hospitalization costs of HK$6,520 (4 days), and veterinary consultation fees of HK$800 (assuming one consultation).

Prudential's PRUChoice Furkid Care - Plan B# provides comprehensive pet medical insurance to alleviate the burden of pet medical expenses for pet owner. Case 2:Intervertebral Disc Herniation

A 6-year-old dog suffers from severe intervertebral disc herniation, with total medical expenses amounting to $140,300. This includes outpatient and surgical costs of $131,380 (assuming one surgery, X-ray examination, ultrasound examination, MRI scan, and laboratory tests), hospitalization costs of $6,520 (assuming 4 days), and veterinary consultation fees of $2,400 (assuming 6 consultations).

After deducting a 30% co-payment, the eligible compensation amount under PRUChoice Furkid Care - Plan B# is up to $84,646!

*Maximum limit per visit

^ Section 1-D Chemotherapy and Heart Diseases Treatment Benefit will indemnify the Insured against the incurred additional cost in excess of the maximum limit per visit under Section 1-A. vi.
